Sancheong Eupcheongjeong Pavilion
산청읍청정 · 山淸揖淸亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion was built by Gwon Du-hui, a 33rd-generation descendant of the Andong Gwon clan, to honour the spirit of his ancestors, pray for the prosperity and harmony of the local community, and exchange scholarship with Confucian scholars from various regions. He often climbed up to the pavilion to recite poetry, and fondly called it Eupcheong. The pavilion stands where Jeokbyeoksan Mountain and Baekmasan Mountain, set amid strikingly beautiful scenery, encircle the site like a folding screen, and the Gyeonghogang River bends around to form a clear sandy shore. It measures five bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof (paljak roof) that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side, and raised wooden-floored verandas are built on both sides of the building. Construction began in 1917 and was completed in 1919; in the treatment of its door lattices and window frames, the pavilion clearly displays the features of traditional architecture faithful to a pavilion's role of valuing harmony with nature.
