Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPunghojeong Pavilion was built by Sin Ji (1424-?), posthumously titled Pungho-gong, the founding ancestor of the Hapgang-dong branch of the Pyeongsan Sin clan. Sin Ji was an 18th-generation descendant of Sin Sung-gyeom, a meritorious subject who helped found Goryeo, and was born in Wonju, Gangwon-do. His official post rose to deputy director of the Uiyeonggo, a royal provisions office, and as an incorruptible official known as cheongbaekri he is said to have lectured with numerous scholars at this pavilion. Facing the Banbyeoncheon Stream that flows in front, the complex is laid out in a straight line centred on Punghojeong Pavilion, with a memorial stele pavilion to its right and the square (ㅁ-shaped) traditional residence, Jusa, to its left. Punghojeong Pavilion has a central wooden-floored hall flanked by heated ondol rooms on either side, and its roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof forming the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. It was built around the end of the 15th century, rebuilt in 1683, the ninth year of King Sukjong, and rebuilt again in 1947, so that much of its original appearance has been lost. Beside Punghojeong Pavilion also stands the Ssangjeol Stele Pavilion, honouring the meritorious deeds performed during the Japanese invasions of 1592 by his descendant Sin Ye-nam and his wife. Jusa, the residential building, measures four bays by four bays in a square (ㅁ-shaped) layout, and provides valuable material for studying traditional houses of the northern Gyeongsangbuk-do region.
