Old House of Bakjinsa Temple, Goseong
고성 박진사 고가 · 固城 朴進士 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house of the Miryang Bak clan, from which licentiate scholars (jinsa, holders of a Joseon civil-service literary degree) and filial sons were born for generations, and it retains the well-preserved form of a Joseon-period gentry (sadaebu) house. The filial son Bak Hyo-geun was born in this house, and his son Bak Han-hoe and his grandson both held the jinsa degree. Built in the late Joseon period and extensively rebuilt during the Japanese colonial period, the house consists of two main buildings — the anchae (main hall) and sarangchae (men's quarters) — two storehouses, and a gate house, with its surrounding wall well preserved. A plaque commemorating the filial son's official commendation (hyoja jeongnyeo) is mounted at the gate. The anchae, five bays wide and two bays deep, consists of a kitchen, rooms, a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), and a small side room (gatbang). To the east of the anchae, a wall encloses an inner sarangchae arranged like a separate annex, while the middle-gate building serves as the outer sarangchae; a wall was built so that the anchae cannot be seen directly from the middle gate. The whole house is enclosed by a high wall, decorated with a pattern made by setting in pieces of roof tile. Renovated again during the Japanese colonial period, this traditional Korean house, which combines practicality with tradition, is valuable material for the study of changes in late Joseon architecture.
