Yangsan Jisallibubu Statue
양산지산리부부상 · 梁山芝山里夫婦像

This is a folk-painting-style (minhwa) depiction, in colour on paper, of a military official and his wife. The painting once hung in a shrine near the couple's tomb in Yangsan; when the shrine was damaged by a typhoon in 1958, a shaman retrieved it and made it an object of worship. Around 1970 it came to be kept here at Chwiseonjae. The wife is shown against a background of a folding screen, a sewing box and a mirror stand. Her hair is gathered into a bun at the nape of her neck, and she wears a jeogori (short upper garment) so short that it exposes her chest; because the jacket is so short, the gap under the arms between jeogori and skirt is cinched with a covering waistband, giving her a very distinctive appearance. The husband wears red armour of cloth studded with metal rivets, and a helmet. Judging from the characteristics of the clothing worn by the couple, both paintings are thought to date from the late Joseon period, and they are important academic material for the study of late Joseon painting and the history of costume.
