These are historical documents relating to the Panseogongpa branch of the Cheongju Han clan, comprising eleven items in all: two royal appointment certificates (gyoji) and nine petitions requesting a commendation for filial piety (hyohaeng jeongnyeo). The two gyoji are an appointment certificate for Han Seong-won, issued in the 16th year of King Injo of Joseon (1638), conferring on him the senior second rank among dangsanggwan (senior court officials entitled to a seat in the royal council), and an appointment certificate for Han Chi-beom, issued in the 8th year of King Hyojong (1657), conferring the junior second rank among dangsanggwan. Both are old documents in good condition. Moreover, the Han Seong-won certificate uses the Chongde reign title (an era name of Qing China) in the period immediately after the Byeongja War (the Qing invasion of Joseon of 1636–37), making it excellent historical material for confirming Joseon's foreign relations with Ming and Qing China at the time. The nine petitions for a filial-piety commendation are appeals submitted by local residents requesting that the state honour the filial conduct of Han Jin-gyu, a filial son who lived in Pyeonggeo-ri, Jinju. Written between roughly 100 and 140 years ago, they show influential local figures submitting the same request nine times over about 40 years on behalf of a single person's filial conduct; they are valuable material for social history, revealing the internal structure of the local community of the time and its relationship with the local Confucian scholarly community. These historical documents of the Panseogongpa branch of the Cheongju Han clan are important academic material for the study of historical documents of the late Joseon period.
