This is said to be a well that stood in the house of Mo-rye (also written Mo-rok), Silla's first Buddhist believer. When the Goguryeo monk Mukhoja came to Silla to spread Buddhism, Mo-rye is said to have dug a cave within his house and hidden Mukhoja there for three years. It is also told that when the monk Ado, who first transmitted Buddhism to Silla, came to the kingdom with three attendants, Mo-rye likewise let them stay in his house. The well was built by stacking rectangular stones 3 m long into the shape of a large jar, with thick wooden planks laid on the bottom. The exact date of its construction is unknown.
