Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Yi Deok-hyeong (1561–1613), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period known by his pen name Han Eum, now preserved in the Han Eum Yeongdang, a shrine built to house his portrait. He passed the civil service examination in 1580, the 13th year of King Seonjo, and was appointed to the Seungmuwon. In 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, he rose to Vice Minister of Rites while concurrently holding the senior scholarly post of Daejehak. He later rose to Minister of War, Right State Councillor and Left State Councillor, and when King Gwanghaegun came to the throne in 1608 he was recommended for the post of Chief State Councillor. However, he opposed the execution of Grand Prince Yeongchang, was stripped of his position as a result, and lived out his life in seclusion at Yanggeun. He was also accomplished in calligraphy and left behind a collection of writings, the Han Eum mungo. Today his spirit tablet is enshrined and rites are performed for him at Yongyeon Seowon in Pocheon, Geunam Seowon in Sangju and other academies.
