Inscribed "Dongchi8nyeon" Guardian Deities Painting of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan
양산 통도사 동치8년명 신중도 · 通度寺同治八年銘神衆圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA sinjungdo is a devotional Buddhist painting that depicts, in an easily legible form, the sinjung, dharma-protecting benevolent spirits worshipped as objects of faith in Mahayana Buddhism. This example, a hanging scroll held in the Tongdosa Temple Seongbo Museum, is painted in colour on silk and measures 127.0 cm by 109.9 cm. In its composition, Jeseokcheon (Indra) is enshrined at the centre of the upper register, surrounded by heavenly beings, while Dongjin Bosal, the bodhisattva Skanda, occupies the centre of the lower register, surrounded by guardian figures. According to the inscription on the painting, it was made in 1869, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, for enshrinement at Doseongam Hermitage of Manse Temple, and was painted by the monk Gyejeong. Its condition is poor, with considerable abrasion and loss of pigment, but it remains valuable as academic material for the study of late Joseon painting history.
