This shrine was built in 1922 to honour Yang Seong-ji (1414–1482), a civil official of the Joseon dynasty whose pen name was Nuljae. He held numerous posts, including Inspector-General and Minister of Personnel, and consistently devoted himself to researching practical policies for the state. He argued for the establishment of medical institutions in every region for the people's livelihood, stressed the importance of Korea's own native customs, and called for the state examination system to be reformed to suit practical reality. He also opened a private school at Gwiamsa, contributing to local education. Gwiamsa also houses the Nuljae Yang-seonsaeng Myobi, a stele in the shrine recording his achievements.
