Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a jaesa, a ritual house built to guard the tomb of Kim Neuk (1540–1616), posthumously titled Minjeolgong. Kim Neuk was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period whose pen name was Baegam. In 1576, the ninth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, he passed the state examination and went on to hold many posts, including a supernumerary post in the Ministry of Rites (Yejo Wonoerang), Royal Secretary (Doseungji), Vice Minister of Personnel (Ijo Chamsin) and Director of the National Confucian Academy (Daesaseong). During the Japanese invasions, he travelled through the Yeongnam region conveying to local scholars the resolve to drive out the Japanese forces, and governed the people well; while serving as Magistrate of Andong he also had embankments rebuilt to prevent the frequent flooding of the Nakdonggang River. After his death he was posthumously awarded the post of Minister of Personnel, and his writings survive in the collection Baegam Munjip. Baegamjaesa is a building five kan (structural bays) wide and five kan deep, with mud-plastered walls and a mixture of round and square pillars. It is a valuable example illustrating the characteristic features of a jaesa in the northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
