Yongsan Village School, Sancheong
산청 용산서당 · 山淸龍山書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYongsan Village School was built on the site where three virtuous scholars — Hong Seong-hae, pen name Ochon; Hong Dae-hae, pen name Dunam; and Hong Gi-beom, pen name Ubong — had lived in seclusion and devoted themselves to scholarship. Of the three, Hong Seong-hae, pen name Ochon, distinguished himself by raising a militia and defending his home district during the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War, the Japanese invasions of 1592 and 1597. The building was originally a ritual house called Yongsanjae, later converted into a village school. This village school is a valuable building, clearly showing the architectural characteristics of structures from the 1800s. It measures four bays across the front and two bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side. The major structural members retain their old form: holes are visible in several places, including the outer and inner columns and the main beam, and in places these holes have been patched over. The roof framing around the ridge purlin above the main beam shows a somewhat archaic joinery technique. The ceilings of the rooms on either side are both lattice-coffered ujumbanja ceilings, and the rear wall of the wooden-floored hall is finished with plaster rendering rather than wooden plank panelling.
