Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the place where officials of the Hongseong region carried out their administrative duties during the Joseon period. It comprises the dongheon, a local government office where general administrative business was handled; the hyeongbangcheong, where policing and judicial matters were handled; and the chaeksil, where books and documents were kept and where the sons of officials studied. The dongheon originally stood at Bunu-teo in Geumgok-ri, Gyeolseong-myeon, in the late Goryeo period, before being moved to the top of the mountain fortress at Gyeolseong-eup in 1400, the second year of King Jeongjong. It was rebuilt at its present location in Eumnae-ri in 1665, the sixth year of King Hyeonjong, and has since been repaired and rebuilt on several occasions. The dongheon building is five kan wide and three kan deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that, seen from the side, forms a shape resembling the Chinese character for "eight" (八). The hyeongbangcheong is L-shaped, and the chaeksil is two kan wide and one-and-a-half kan deep, with a hipped roof that appears trapezoidal when viewed from the front.
