Saamjae is a jaesil, a hall built near a family grave for the performance of ancestral rites, erected close to the burial site of Yi Ae and his wife, Lady Baek of the Jinseong clan. Yi Ae (1480–1561) was the son of Geunjaegong, who had served as governor of Hwanghae Province; after passing the state civil examination in 1515, the tenth year of King Jungjong, he held posts including Seonjeongwan (a royal messenger-officer), Inspector in the Office of the Inspector General (Saheonbu), and Magistrate of Gyeongju. Illness kept him from office for more than twenty years, until he was granted the rank of Tongjeong in 1560, the fifteenth year of King Myeongjong, but he died the following year. Saamjae was first built in 1565, the twentieth year of King Myeongjong, and was rebuilt in 1659, the tenth year of King Hyojong; although it has undergone several rounds of repair since then, the original form it took at that time survives well.
