Jinju Local Gentry Register
진주향안 · 晋州鄕案

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThree versions of the Jinju Local Gentry Register (hyangan, a register listing local gentry families) are known today, none of which is the original. The Jinju register was first compiled in 1617, and thereafter, as new members were periodically admitted up to 1712, revised registers were drawn up and kept as separate bound volumes. This particular register was compiled in 1634, the twelfth year of King Injo, and is not included among the previously known versions. It opens with the name of Gang Ji-teuk, an ancestor of its present owner Gang Tae-jung, and contains ten articles of regulations together with Gang Ji-teuk's postscript. It is written on Korean paper measuring 31 cm wide by 43.3 cm long, comprising eight sheets bound together as a single volume. It is presumed to be the original register for that particular year, and is an important source for understanding the standing of powerful families in the Jinju region at the time. It is valued as especially significant academic material because it contains local gentry regulations from the Jinju region that had previously been unknown.
