Geumhoseowon Confucian Academy
금호서원 · 琴湖書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seowon (Confucian academy) was built to honour General Yi Un-ryong, pen name Donggye, and Baek Sin, pen name Hyangsan. Yi Un-ryong (1562–1610) passed the military service examination in 1585, the eighteenth year of King Seonjo, and won great distinction during the Japanese invasions of Korea, rising to Right Naval Commander of Gyeongsang Province and concurrently Naval Commander-in-Chief of the Three Provinces. The academy originated when Sangchungsa Shrine was built at Onmak-ri, Maejeon-myeon, Yi Un-ryong's birthplace. It was moved to Geumchon-ri, Iseo-myeon, in 1814, the fourteenth year of King Sunjo, but in 1848, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, it was torn down under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies; the surviving lecture hall was relocated to its present site and renamed Hyochungsa. The academy was rebuilt in 1947 and has continued to the present. Passing through the outer gate, Sideokmun, one finds the lecture hall flanked by the east and west dormitories; behind the lecture hall stands the inner gate, beyond which is Hyeonchungsa Shrine.
