Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are historical documents held by Ju Yong-sik of the Sangju Ju clan, Eoeungong branch, comprising fifteen items in total: four royal appointment certificates (gyoji), three official directives (jeollyeongmun), one envelope used for an official directive, five petitions (deungjangmun), one loan document, and one document of property division (bunjaegi). Of the four royal appointment certificates, three were issued to Ju Gyeong-seok (周敬奭) and one to his wife, of the Changnyeong Seong clan. The certificates issued to Ju Gyeong-seok are a certificate appointing him Tongdeongnang, dated the eighth month of 1877 (the third year of the Guangxu era); and two from the sixth month of 1883 (the ninth year of Guangxu), appointing him Tongjeongdaebu and then Jeolchung Janggun Haeng Cheomjijungchubusa Gyeom Owijang. The certificate issued to his wife is one appointing her Sukbuin, dated the first month of 1884 (the tenth year of Guangxu). The three official directives date from the ninth month of 1877, the first month of 1884, and the third month of 1884 (gapsin). The envelope was used for the directive of the third month of 1884; the fact that the directive was kept inside this envelope helps to clarify its character, and the positions of the seals used on the envelope are also noteworthy. Of the five petitions, the earliest is one from 1869 (gisa), submitted by residents of a sub-county to the local magistrate over an unanswered matter. The remaining four all date from 1877 (jeongchuk): a petition from the residents of Nodong-ri, Bugok-myeon, in the second month; a petition from local residents in the third month; and two petitions from Nodong, Yeongsan-bugok-myeon, in the fourth and ninth months. The loan document was drawn up in the tenth month of 1881 (sinsa). The document of property division was drawn up on the thirtieth day of the second month of 1881, written by Ju Gyeong-seok's clan relative, Gyeong-ui (敬儀). The historical documents held by Ju Yong-sik of the Sangju Ju clan, Eoeungong branch, are valuable academic material of importance for the study of historical documents from the end of the Joseon period.
