Byeogodang Hall Name Plaque, Jinju
진주 벽오당 현판 · 碧悟堂懸板

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the name plaque of the Byeogodang hall, which once stood within the Hyangsadang (a local gentry hall) in Jinju. Byeogodang was built in the early Joseon period to house the royal edict that King Taejong personally bestowed on Ha Ryun (1347-1416). The plaque measures 220 cm wide and 100 cm high. Nine pine boards were joined together, and the characters '碧梧堂' (Byeogodang) are carved in relief from right to left. Three holes were bored near the top and two more around the middle for hanging the plaque, showing that it was originally hung at a slight tilt. The characters are written in the standard script (haeseo). Their composition is so perfectly balanced as to leave no gap, the brushwork is disciplined and firm, yet the whole conveys a generous sense of ease. As the plaque bears no inscription recording its date, its exact age cannot be determined. However, judging from its calligraphic style and the historical circumstances, and given that it has been well preserved under a coat of lacquer, it is presumed to have been made sometime between 1578 and 1642. This plaque not only confirms the existence of the Byeogodang hall within the Hyangsadang in Jinju, but, through the holes still visible in it, also shows how such plaques were hung, making it valuable material for understanding Korea's plaque-making tradition.
