양산 통도사 가경19년명 아미타후불탱 · 通度寺嘉慶拾玖年阿彌陀後佛幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an Amitabha altar painting (a taenghwa — a Buddhist painting made on cloth or paper and mounted as a framed picture or hanging scroll) preserved at Tongdosa Temple. The silk ground was coated with vermilion, over which the imagery was rendered in fine white outline. Centred on the Amitabha image at the top of the composition, the Eight Great Bodhisattvas and the Four Heavenly Kings are arranged on either side. Around the central Amitabha image, two bodhisattva figures are placed on each side, with Ananda and Kashyapa above them, and a single Buddha figure placed outside each pair. According to an inscription at the centre of the lower part of the composition, the painting was made in the nineteenth year of the Jiaqing era, that is, in 1814, the fourteenth year of King Sunjo of Joseon. It is regarded as important academic material for research into the history of Buddhist painting in the Joseon period.
