Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an altar painting of Amitabha Buddha preserved at Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan. A taenghwa is a Buddhist painting made on cloth or paper and mounted as a framed picture or hanging scroll. Painted in colour on a silk ground, this work was made by joining two panels, one above the other. Amitabha is seated at the centre of the composition, flanked by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva on the left and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva on the right, while two further bodhisattvas and the disciples Ananda and Kasyapa are arranged above. An inscription in the lower corners of the painting records that it was made in "the twenty-second year since His Majesty's accession, the byeongsin year", that is, 1896. It is important scholarly material for the study of the history of Buddhist painting in the Joseon period.
