Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the place where Deokbong Yi Jin-taek (1738–1805) returned to his hometown in his later years to train younger scholars and pursue his studies. Yi Jin-taek passed the munkwa civil service examination during the reign of King Jeongjo of Joseon, and served successively as Jeongnang of the Ministry of Rites, Jeongnang of the Ministry of War, and Jangnyeong of the Office of the Inspector General. In 1793 he submitted a memorial calling for the abolition of private slavery, which became a decisive factor in its elimination, and as a result of this reform movement, public slaves were emancipated in 1801, the first year of King Sunjo. In 1905, the ninth year of the Gwangmu era, his great-grandson Yi U-yeong built a shrine in his memory. Deokbongjeongsa stands at the foot of Tohamsan Mountain. In consideration of the surrounding natural setting, the building was constructed on an L-shaped plan, with a small pond in front, forming a fine natural scene together with the broad fields in the distance.
