They comprise five titles in eight volumes in total: the Yongdam yugo (Yongdam's Posthumous Writings, 1 volume); the Yongdam chwigyujeong japyeong, a collection of miscellaneous verse written at the Chwigyujeong pavilion, in a regular-script edition of 1 volume (1599) and a cursive-script edition of 1 volume (1600); the Imo Samabangmok, a Samabangmok (Roster of Licentiate Examination Passers) of 1 volume (1582); and the Garye buhae, a commentary appended to the Family Rites, in 4 volumes. The master's taboo name was Heul, his courtesy name Tak-i, and his pen name Yongdam; his family's ancestral seat was Pungcheon. Having come second in the Licentiate examination held in 1582, he soon retired to Bonghwa in Gyeongsangbuk-do, built a house in Yongdam Valley and took pleasure in the Confucian classics and historical records. He had studied in his youth under Sogo Bak Seung-im, Wolcheon Jo Mok and Hangang Jeong Gu, all disciples of Toegye Yi (Hwang), becoming so well versed in the study of ritual that he was regarded as a man of great stature for his age. Hangang in particular said of him: "Your immersion in the Way grows deeper with each day, which I greatly envy; it is a pity that I cannot always deliberate deeply together with a lover of ritual propriety such as you." When the Japanese invasion broke out in 1592, he raised a righteous army together with Ryu Jong-gae and others and fought the Japanese forces in the Mungyeong area, achieving many successes. He was appointed respectively as Chambong (a junior official) of the Jeonokseo, the Office of Prisons, and as Dongmonggyogwan, an instructor of children, but when the political world grew turbid through the tyranny of Yi I-cheom and others, he submitted a memorial denouncing the powerful and privileged, then retired to his home village, cut off all contact with the outside world and spent his remaining years in reading. Later generations have called him a scholar of loyalty and righteousness, and a man of lofty integrity living in retirement.
