Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Hyeonwang painting (hyeonwangtaeng) preserved at Tongdosa Temple. A hyeonwangtaeng depicts King Hyeonwang, the king of the underworld whom the dead meet for judgement three days after death, together with his retinue. Painted in colour on a silk ground, this painting shows traces of three silk panels joined together. Against the background of a twelve-panel screen in the upper section, it depicts King Hyeonwang, wearing a crown and holding a ceremonial tablet, presiding over the judgement at the centre. Arranged around him are officials of his retinue, clerks, child attendants, and figures with horse heads and ox heads. An inscription in the lower part of the painting records that it was made in the year 'Hampung 7-nyeon', that is, 1857, the eighth year of King Cheoljong of Joseon. The Tongdosa Temple Hampung 7-nyeon Hyeonwang Painting is an important scholarly resource for the study of the history of Buddhist painting in the Joseon period.
