Inscribed "Dongchi3nyeon" Hyeonwang Painting of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan
양산 통도사 동치3년명 현왕탱 · 通度寺同治三年現王幀

This is a Hyeonwang ritual painting preserved at Tongdosa Temple. A "Hyeonwangtaeng" depicts the King of the Underworld, before whom the dead are judged three days after death, together with his retinue. Painted in colour on silk, the composition is divided into an upper section set against a folding screen and a lower section laid with a mat, with the king placed above and his retinue below. The king sits on a chair at the centre, while on the mat below, officiating deities, a court recorder and other attendants are arranged in a semicircle around him. A six-panel folding screen forms the background of the upper section, and a patterned mat covers the floor of the lower section. According to inscriptions on the lower left and right of the painting, it was produced in the third year of Dongchi, that is, in 1864. The Dongchi Third Year Hyeonwang Painting of Tongdosa Temple is important academic material for the study of Joseon-period Buddhist painting history.
