This is a Buddha image carved in relief on the granite cliff to the west of Wangdaesa. It is badly weathered and difficult to make out clearly, but the head, the shoulders, and the left side of the Buddha's robe survive. There is a single figure. Two lines around the head clearly mark a halo (dugwang), and an aureole (singwang) is also shown around the body. The surviving portion is 386 cm high and 160 cm wide, and the carved lines are about 1 cm deep. According to legend, King Gyeongsun of Silla gave up his throne and came to live here, where he made a Maitreya Buddha; it is also said that the rock naturally took the form of a Maitreya Buddha when the cliff face broke away.
