Yongdamsa Temple is said to have been founded by the Venerable Uisang in 664, the fourth year of King Munmu of Silla, and rebuilt in 1800, the 24th year of King Jeongjo of Joseon. Geumjeongam is a hermitage affiliated with Yongdamsa; its grounds include the Hwaeom Lecture Hall along with a shrine to the mountain spirit (Sansin-gak), Usangjeon Hall, and Jeondeungjeon Hall, among others. The Hwaeom Lecture Hall is eight bays across the front and three bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八). The two bays at the left are used as a kitchen, and the remaining bays have a narrow wooden veranda at the front, behind which are arranged a Buddha hall, an ondol (heated-floor) room, a storeroom, and the like. This place has long served the people of Andong both as a site for praying for good fortune and as a centre of Buddhist learning.
