Hong Jin Painting Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are two portraits of Hong Jin-do (1584–1647), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period: one full-length portrait and one facial portrait. Hong Jin-do was a maternal cousin of King Injo of Joseon, and he served in posts including Jwarang (a sixth-rank secretary) in the Board of Works, Magistrate of Gongju, and Pan-jungchubusa, a senior post in the Privy Council (Jungchubu). In the full-length portrait he is shown facing right, seated in a chair draped with a tiger skin. He wears a sama (a black horsehair official's cap) and an official robe of purple silk. On the chest is a rank badge (hyungbae) embroidered with two cranes amid cloud patterns, and he wears an official belt (gwandae) at the waist. The facial portrait appears to have been copied separately from the face in the full-length portrait. It is a typical example of a meritorious-subject portrait (gongsindo) from the mid-Joseon period.
