Nongadang Head House, Yeongdeok
영덕 농아당 종택 · 盈德 聾啞堂 宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house where Park Hong-jang, a military official of the Joseon period in the reign of King Seonjo, once lived. Park Hong-jang (1558–1598) was a military commander who distinguished himself during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). On the recommendation of Yu Seong-ryong, he was sent to Japan as a tongsinsa, a diplomatic envoy, to help settle the aftermath of the war. Although Toyotomi treated the Korean mission with contempt, Park did not yield in the slightest, holding firm in his resolve for the sake of his country. The house was built in 1570, the third year of King Seonjo, and has been handed down since, though part of the building was destroyed by fire in 1720, the forty-sixth year of King Sukjong. It measures four kan, or structural bays, across the front and two kan on the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side. A distinctive feature is the ventilation opening in the ceiling, similar in form to those found in kkachi-gumeong-jip ("magpie-hole houses"), a type of thatched house.
