A placenta chamber (taesil) is where the placenta of a king or his descendants was buried, and a stele commemorating the enshrinement is erected in front of it. This site once held the placenta chamber of King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720), the 19th king of Joseon, but in 1869, the second year of Emperor Gojong, the placenta and its chamber were relocated to Yangju, Gyeonggi-do, leaving only two placenta chamber steles here today. Of the two steles, the slightly smaller one was erected together with the placenta chamber in 1661, the second year of King Hyeonjong; it has a square base stone supporting the stele body, topped with a capstone whose sides are rolled into two rounded tiers. The other stele was erected in 1683, nine years after Sukjong's accession to the throne, and has the stele body set on a turtle-shaped base stone, topped with a capstone carved with dragons. After the placenta chamber was moved, the steles were left scattered until Gongju City repaired them in 1991, restoring them to their present form.
