Hoegye Village School was built in 1918 to honour the achievements and scholarly virtue of Chudam Yun Seon (1559-1640) and to promote the spirit of loyalty and filial piety. Yun Seon served through the reigns of King Seonjo and King Gwanghaegun, holding posts such as Inspector-General, Director of the National Academy, Chief Royal Secretary and Right State Councillor, and was honoured as a cheongbaekli, an official celebrated for his integrity. His spirit tablet is enshrined at Imnanchangeuisa Shrine in Hapcheon, where a memorial rite is held every year on 10 May. On the sloping ground behind the site, the gate quarters and the lecture hall are set on a single axis, with east and west dormitories placed to either side of the main hall, forming a square, mouth-shaped layout; a wall encloses part of the front and sides. The lecture hall is six kan wide at the front and two kan deep, with narrow open verandas (toet) front and back; its rooms are arranged around a central two-kan daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, with two kan of ondol rooms to the left and, to the right, a room and an naeru, an inner loft-like space. The front, the veranda bay and the naeru all have gyeja balustrades, curved wooden railings, and the floors throughout are laid in the well pattern of wooden flooring. At the front, thick round pillars stand on octagonal cornerstones set on a platform built of long dressed stones, while relatively large square pillars were used for the room sections. The east and west dormitories are each three kan wide and two kan deep, also with front and back verandas, and are arranged in the same way, with two kan of ondol rooms and one kan as an naeru facing toward the gate quarters; their platforms, cornerstones and pillars resemble those of the lecture hall. Hoegye Village School retains the styles and techniques of late Joseon architecture intact, in its woodworking methods, its use of front and back verandas, and its decorative details, giving it great scholarly value.
