Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGusan Village School was built in 1904, the eighth year of the Gwangmu era, to honour the achievements and scholarly virtue of Yun Tak (pen name Seongwol, 1554–1593) and to promote the spirit of loyalty and filial devotion. Yun Tak served as deputy chief of the Hullyeonwon, the Military Training Institute, and when the Japanese invasions of Korea broke out, he raised a righteous army together with General Gwak Jae-u of Uiryeong, and was active in the Uiryeong and Changnyeong area. He took part in the First Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress, assisting Kim Si-min, the magistrate of Jinju, and also fought in the Second Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress, where he died together with Kim Cheon-il, Choe Gyeong-hoe and others when the fortress fell. The school consists of one school building and one gate building, arranged in a straight line. The school building has four kan, or structural bays, across the front and two kan on the side; it is centred on a daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, flanked on both sides by ondol rooms heated by underfloor flues, with a railed veranda running along the front of the rooms.
