Bonggoksa Temple stands in a valley on the north-east side of Bongsusan Mountain; according to records, it is said to have been founded by State Preceptor Doseon in 887, the first year of Queen Jinseong of Silla. It was rebuilt several times afterwards; having fallen into ruin during the Japanese invasions of 1592-98, it was rebuilt in 1647, the 24th year of King Injo, and renovated again in 1794, the 18th year of King Jeongjo. Up to that point the temple had been called Seogamsa, but when it was rebuilt its name was changed to Bonggoksa. The Dharma hall and the monks' quarters were rebuilt again in 1891, the seventh year of Emperor Gojong, giving the temple its present form.
