Sangsan Kim Clan Historical Documents, Sancheong
산청 상산김씨 고문서 · 山淸商山金氏古文書

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are historical documents held by the Sangsan Kim clan: ten items in all, comprising one deed of adoption (gyehu-ipan), seven household registers (hogu-danja) and two documents relating to the sale of slaves (nobi maemae munseo). The deed of adoption is an official certification of the taking of an heir, drawn up in 1800, the fifth year of the Jiaqing era. When Kim Sin-han (1766–1798) died leaving no son, his wife, Lady Jo of the Haman Jo clan (1767–1827), arranged with her husband's sixth cousin Kim Gae-han (1762–1815) to adopt his second son, Hyeong-yun (1787–1840); the agreement reached between the two sides was certified by the local government. In this document, Kim I-ok (1746–1810), son of Kim Don, art name Mukjae (1702–1770), stood as guarantor in his capacity as munjang, head of the clan branch, at the time of certification. The household registers belong to the descendants of Kim Guk-hyeon of the Sangsan Kim clan; seven survive, dated 1834, 1864, 1867, 1870, 1873, 1876 and 1888. Though not numerous, they show that the name of the head of household was changed quite frequently. The documents relating to the sale of slaves — a bill of sale together with certificates issued by the government office — consist of one bill of sale dated 1828, the eighth year of the Daoguang era, by which Kim I-taek sold his slave to Gang Dae-il, and, from the following year, one record of testimony (chosa, statements taken by the authorities from the parties concerned) and one certification (ipan) obtained after petitioning the government. This bill of sale is notable for having survived together with its attached testimony and certification. Such a document would normally have been kept by the buyer, so the fact that it was instead preserved within the seller's own clan — Kim I-taek being a changed name of Kim I-hwan — suggests that some particular circumstance must have intervened. The historical documents held by Kim Sang-so of Pyeongji-ri, Sancheong are of academic value for the study of documents of the late Joseon period (19th century).
