Seated Geoje Sejinam Hermitage Wooden Buddha Buddha Triad
거제세진암목조여래삼존불좌상 · 巨濟洗塵庵木造如來三尊佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAs the head temple of the Jogye Order on Geoje, Sejinam Hermitage enshrines a Buddha triad made of juniper wood, moved here about 300 years ago from the site of an old temple in Hai-myeon, Goseong County. The triad is carved in separate sections — head, body, arms and legs — and then assembled. Among the votive objects (bokjang) placed inside the body of the statue is a dedicatory inscription which, translated, reads: "Made by Hwagong in the fifth month of the Gyemi year, the forty-second year of the Kangxi era, at Simjeokam Hermitage on Mount Waryongsan." This confirms that the statue was made in 1703 (the twenty-ninth year of King Sukjong) at Simjeokam Hermitage on Mount Waryongsan. Sejinam Hermitage itself is said to have last been rebuilt about a hundred years ago, and a Japanese record stating that "there was an old temple in Geoje-myeon during the Korean Empire" is thought to refer to Sejinam.
