Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are woodblocks for four different books kept at the head house of the Songjeong branch of the Jinyang Ha clan; a total of 112 blocks are currently preserved. Of these, 62 belong to the Songjeongjip (Collected Works of Songjeong), 30 to the Gakjaejip (Collected Works of Gakjae), 8 to the Baegam Ilgo (Posthumous Manuscripts of Baegam), and 12 to the Daegak Seowon Chilseonsaeng Silgi (Record of the Seven Masters of Daegak Seowon). The woodblocks were originally kept at Naksuam Hermitage, below Gyeongjeolsa Shrine, the shrine dedicated to Ha Gong-jin. Of the 194 Songjeongjip woodblocks originally made, 62 survive; according to the Songjeong Yeonbo (Chronological Record of Songjeong), the book was published in 1788. Songjeong Ha Su-il (1553–1612) was both a grand-nephew and a disciple of Gakjae Ha Hang, an outstanding pupil of Nammyeong Jo Sik, and by passing on this learning to Gyeomjae Ha Hong-do he played an important part in establishing the Nammyeong school in the Jinju region. Of the 82 Gakjaejip woodblocks originally made, 30 survive; the first edition of 63 blocks was published in 1813, and the surviving blocks are from a second printing of 1844. Gakjae Ha Hang (1538–1590), an outstanding pupil of Nammyeong, led the establishment of a seowon (Confucian academy) for Nammyeong at Deoksan after his death, together with Suudang Choe Yeong-gyeong, and helped lay the foundation on which Nammyeong's learning developed into a distinct school. Eight woodblocks of the Baegam Ilgo survive; the original total and the year of publication are both unknown. Baegam Kim Dae-myeong (1536–1603), a disciple of Nammyeong, served as a county magistrate and also took part in righteous-army activities during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598. Of the 39 Daegak Seowon Chilseonsaeng Silgi woodblocks originally made, 12 survive, published in 1813. The "Seven Masters" are seven figures of the Nammyeong school enshrined at Daegak Seowon, in Daegak-chon, Sugok-myeon, Jinju: Gakjae Ha Hang, Museong Son Cheon-u (1533–1594), Baegam Kim Dae-myeong, Yeongmuseong Ha Eung-do (1540–1610), Mochon Yi Jeong (1541–1613), Jogye Yu Jong-ji (1546–1589) and Songjeong Ha Su-il. Although much has been lost, the surviving woodblocks of the Jinyang Ha clan's Songjeong head house at Sagok-ri, Jinju, relating to the Seven Masters, are considered important material for understanding the character of the Nammyeong school in western Jinju in the late 16th century.
