Dangjin Han Gap-dong House
당진한갑동가옥 · 唐津韓甲東家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house, standing in a village ringed by low hills with views of the Charyeong Mountains and Deoksungsan Mountain and a broad plain spread out below, was built in 1919 and is also known as Wirye-jang. The building consists of an L-shaped main house (anchae) and a straight-line men's quarters (sarangchae), together forming an overall U-shaped layout; timber from the former government office of Myeoncheon is said to have been reused in its construction. In the L-shaped main house, the main room (anbang) and the upper room (witbang) are arranged around a central wooden-floored hall (daecheong), with a room across the hall (geonneonbang) to its left, and a two-bay kitchen in front of the main room. The plan of the straight-line sarangchae runs, from right to left, a narrow veranda (toenmaru), the men's reception hall (sarang daecheong), the men's quarters proper (sarangbang), a middle room and a storeroom. A notable feature is that its timber members are relatively sound, and that the floor plans of both the main house and the men's quarters remain true to the residential architectural style of the Joseon period.
