Seonsan Samgang River Memorial Gate
선산 삼강정려 · 善山 三綱旌閭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis memorial gate was erected in 1795, the 19th year of King Jeongjo, to honour a loyal subject, a filial son and a virtuous woman from the village of Bonghan-ri. Samgang refers to the three Confucian virtues of loyalty, filial piety and virtue, and a jeongnyeo is a marker set up at the entrance to a village to uphold the spirit of those who exemplified them. The loyal subject, filial son and virtuous woman honoured here are Yaeun Gil Jae, Bae Suk-gi and Yakga, respectively. Gil Jae (1353-1419) was a scholar active at the end of Goryeo and the beginning of Joseon; he entered government service in 1374, but when Goryeo fell and Joseon was founded he returned to his hometown and devoted himself to scholarship and the training of students. Together with Yi Saek and Jeong Mong-ju he is known as one of the Three Recluses of Goryeo. Bae Suk-gi, who lived in the time of King Seongjong of Joseon, served his parents with utmost devotion, while Yakga, the wife of Jo Eul-saeng, is said to have waited faithfully for her husband every day for eight years after he was taken captive by Japanese pirates.
