The Seated Namhae Mangunam Hermitage Stone Bodhisattva is currently enshrined, gilded and in good condition, in the Gwaneumjeon (Avalokitesvara Hall) of Mangunam Hermitage. Mangunam is an old temple dating back to Goryeo that has been rebuilt and repaired several times, and it serves as a site of prayer to Avalokitesvara located just below the summit of Mangunsan Mountain, the chief mountain of Namhae. There is no precise record concerning this seated Avalokitesvara image enshrined here, but according to the oral tradition of local elders who frequented the hermitage around the time of liberation on 15 August 1945, it was said to be a highly efficacious Buddha image made long ago from Gyeongju jade-like stone. The bodhisattva wears a crown on its head, with both hands placed side by side on the knees, and sits in a half-lotus posture with the right foot exposed outside the skirt. It is a small to medium-sized statue, 41.2 cm in total height, and, apart from the omitted pedestal, is otherwise well preserved. The form of the crown, the squarish face and the treatment of the drapery folds are features commonly found in Buddhist statues from the Gyeongnam region from the 18th century onward.
