Gwansan Village School in Changnyeong is a building four bays wide and one-and-a-half bays deep, built with the front half-bay forming a toechan, a narrow eaves-side corridor. The main hall has a wooden plank floor, and the front porch floor of the right-hand room is raised one step higher than the main hall. All the windows and doors of the rooms are sesalmun, lattice doors with fine vertical and horizontal bars: the left-hand room has a double-leaf sesalmun door and the right-hand room a single-leaf one, while the rear wall of the main hall has a plain plank door, giving the building a simple, unadorned character rather than a luxurious one. The timber frame is of the three-purlin type, with a single main beam spanning the centre and a supporting beam connecting it to the front toechan, and there is little ornamentation. The eaves are single eaves and the roof is of the gable type. No record of its construction survives, but it is presumed to have been built around 1900. With its use of a toechan, its simple joinery and modest decorative technique, the building reflects the architectural style and methods of the late Joseon period and holds academic value; it is also in good condition, and above all it is historically significant as the only royally chartered academy (saaek seowon) in the Changnyeong region.
