Gimhae Chilsanjae Hall Lecture Hall
김해칠산재강당 · 金海七山齋講堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis jaegak (ancestral shrine house) was built halfway up Chilbongsan Mountain in Gimhae, near the tomb of Bae Won-ryong, Lord of Bunseong, the subgwanjo (the ancestor who founded the clan seat) of the Bunseong Bae clan. It was built to honour three ancestors of the Bae clan: the sijo (founding ancestor), the jungsijo (secondary founding ancestor), and the subgwanjo. Bunseong-gun, the subgwanjo of the Bunseong Bae clan, had the given name (hwi) Won-ryong and, during the Goryeo dynasty, rose to the positions of Minister of War and Supreme Commander. He is the founder of the present-day Bunseong Bae lineage, and it was through him that the clan's seat (gwanhyang) became Bunseong. Judging from the phrase "Gimhae Chilsan is at Gunggok," recorded in the Bunseong Bae Clan Genealogy (Bunseong Sebo), published in 1759, the gimyo year of King Yeongjo's reign, it is presumed that Chilsanjae was established before the mid-eighteenth century. There is also a record that clan members held a clan assembly in 1764, the gapsin year, and the Statement of Property Register of Gimhae City Hall, drawn up in January 1901, lists Chilsanjae as an ancestral shrine house of the Bae clan, at 1334 Hwamok 5-dong, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. It has been repaired several times since the 1900s; records show renovations in 1907 and again in 1958, and its present appearance is thought to date from the major renovation of 1958. Chilsanjae is a jaesil built in the modern period near the tomb of Bae Won-ryong, Lord of Bunseong, the subgwanjo of the Bunseong Bae clan. It is a historic Confucian building of the late Joseon period that clearly shows the spatial relationship between a tomb and its ancestral shrine house.
