This is a plaque conferred on the memorial gate (jeongnyeomun), a gate erected to honour exemplary loyalty, filial piety or chastity, that commemorates the loyalty of Yi Sim-won (1454–1504), a civil official under King Seongjong of Joseon and a great-great-grandson of Hyoryeong Daegun, the second son of King Taejong. Yi Sim-won studied under Kim Jong-jik and was known for his strict character and his mastery of scholarship and medicine. In 1478, the ninth year of King Seongjong, he was appointed Jugye-bujeong, and in 1487, the eighteenth year of King Seongjong, he placed first in the state examination and was appointed Jeonguidaebu. Having learned of the devious conduct of his uncle by marriage, Im Sa-hong, and his son, he submitted five memorials urging King Seongjong not to give Im Sa-hong an important post. Because of this, during the Gapja sahwa (Gapja Literati Purge) of 1504, the tenth year of Yeonsangun, he was put to death together with his two sons on false charges brought by Im Sa-hong. In 1519, the fourteenth year of King Jungjong, he was cleared of his crime through memorials submitted by Jo Gwang-jo, Jeong Gwang-pil and others, and was posthumously awarded the title Jugyegun. He was later further honoured with the rank of Hongnokdaebu, and a memorial gate was erected to commemorate his loyalty. His conduct was recorded in books such as the "Myeongsillok", the "Samgang haengsil" and the "Gukgo bogam" to highlight his scholarship and loyalty. His writings are collected in the "Seonggwang yugo".
