Jeungdoga (Song of Enlightenment)
증도가 · 證道가

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis book is entirely different from the Jeungdoga designated as Treasure No. 758, and from Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage Nos. 244 and 245 kept at Bulgapsa Temple. While all of those copies carry commentary, this edition has only the original text, 32 characters to a half-leaf, printed in large characters with no annotation. It appears to have been printed both to study the teachings of Buddhist masters and to practise the Songseol calligraphic style of the Yuan-dynasty master Zhao Mengfu, but it seems difficult to date the printing to 1316 as recorded. All the same, a Jeungdoga in this particular form is rarely seen, and judging from the shape of the fish-tail mark on the centrefold and the quality of the paper, the actual date is thought to be considerably earlier. A more careful examination of the writing remaining on the inner leaves would likely reveal the book's original owner, and if his poetry and prose were never otherwise published, this material could itself be recognised as an important source.
