This seated Amitabha Buddha is enshrined at Naewonam Hermitage, known for its mineral spring, to the east of Unmunsa Temple in Unmun-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is carved from a white stone commonly called okdol (jade stone), of a kind often found in the area around Gyeongju. When the statue was being regilded, votive objects (bokjang) enshrined inside it were discovered, including a record stating that it had been made in the twentieth year of the Kangxi reign, the seventh year of King Sukjong (1681). The carving style likewise makes clear that it is a work of the late Joseon period. As stone examples among Buddhist statues of this period are rare, it serves as an important resource for the study of Buddhist statues of the time.
