Seated Yangsan Naewonsa Temple Stone Bodhisattva
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The seated stone bodhisattva at Naewonsa Temple, Yangsan, is shown with its head slightly bowed, both hands resting neatly on its knees, seated cross-legged and facing forward. It wears a cloth hood on its head, which covers about a third of its shoulders and back. Seated in the full lotus position, the image is known at the temple as Beopgi Bosal (Dharmodgata Bodhisattva), a bodhisattva who appears in the chapter on the Abodes of the Bodhisattvas in the Avatamsaka Sutra (Hwaeomgyeong). In Korea in particular, numerous images of Beopgi Bosal are known to have been made in the area of Geumgangsan Mountain. Judging from its overall technique—the facial features, carving method and style of dress—this Buddhist image is considered to have been made in late Joseon, and it is of value as a piece of cultural heritage.
