운암공부조묘 · 耘庵公不조廟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Choe Bong-cheon (1564–1597), pen name Unam, a righteous-army (uibyeong, volunteer militia) leader of the mid-Joseon period. Unam Choe Bong-cheon passed the military examination in the twenty-first year of King Seonjo, and during the Japanese invasions of 1592 he raised a righteous army together with his nephew Choe Jin-rip, rendering great service in the recapture of Yeocheon, Ulsan and Gyeongju fortress. When the second Japanese invasion broke out in 1597, he again raised a righteous army and fought on, but was killed in the Battle of Changam in Yeongcheon. A bujomyo is a shrine built so that the spirit tablet of a person of great service to the state may be enshrined forever rather than buried. The Unamgong Bujomyo is a building with a gable roof, three bays wide and one and a half bays deep.
