A yuheobi is a stele erected to trace the footsteps of a worthy figure of the past, make them known to later generations, and thereby commemorate that person; this stele honours the achievements of Yi Maeng-jeon (1392–1480), a civil official of the early Joseon period and one of the Saengyuksin, six scholars who lived in reclusion out of loyalty to the deposed King Danjong. His pen name was Gyeongeun. He studied under Gil Jae, passed the state examination and entered government service. While serving as magistrate of Geochang, he governed with benevolence and won the praise of the local people, earning the title "cheongbaekri", an incorruptible official. When it became apparent that Prince Suyang intended to seize the throne from his young nephew, King Danjong, he resigned his post and returned to his hometown of Seonsan; after King Danjong was exiled to Yeongwol, he feigned deafness and blindness, living out his life in longing for the king, and died at the age of eighty-nine. The stele has a simple structure, with its body set upon a square base stone; it was erected together with its protective pavilion by Kim Man-jeung, who served as magistrate of Seonsan during the reign of King Sukjong. It originally stood elsewhere but has since been relocated by his descendants for preservation to this site, Hyeonggok Neighbourhood Park, the place of his birth.
