This is the birthplace of Hong Dae-yong (1731–1783), pen name Damheon, a scholar of Silhak (Practical Learning) and a scientific thinker of the late Joseon period. Hong Dae-yong belonged to the Bukhak (Northern Learning) school of Silhak, and widened his scholarly horizons through friendships with noted Bukhak scholars such as Bak Ji-won, Bak Je-ga, Yi Deok-u and Yu Deuk-gong. In 1765, the forty-first year of King Yeongjo, he travelled to Beijing, where he observed Western science and culture before returning home. He was the first person in Korea to argue for the theory of the earth's rotation and the theory of an infinite universe. With a scholarly attitude that sought truth and reality on the basis of fact, and a scientific cast of mind, he was the most outstanding scientific thinker of the Joseon period.
