Oksogwonseop Portrait
옥소권섭영정 · 玉所權燮影幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Gwon Seop (pen name Okso, 1671–1759), a civil official of the late Joseon period. Gwon Seop never entered government service but devoted himself to scholarship in the countryside, immersing himself in poetry and painting; he was later given the honorary court ranks of Tongdeongnang and Gaseondaebu. Painted in colour on silk, the portrait shows him facing to the right and is a bust depicting him only down to the chest. It was painted in 1724, the fourth year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon, by Yi Chi, a painter of the Dohwaseo, the royal bureau of painting; after viewing the finished work, Gwon Seop composed the accompanying inscription himself, which was then written out by his younger brother, Gwon Yeong. The portrait survives largely intact as a whole, so its shading remains clear, but part of it was retouched around 1992, causing it to lose its original appearance. The portrait hall (yeonggak) that houses it was built in 1985.
