Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house where the independence activist Kim Han-jong, styled Ilu, was born. Kim Han-jong (1883–1921), a patriot, was the eldest son of Kim Jae-jeong, who had served under the righteous army commander Min Jong-sik recruiting volunteer soldiers. In 1915, together with Park Sang-jin and others, he organised the Gwangbokhoe, a secret armed independence organisation, in Daegu, and was appointed head of its Chungcheong Province branch; alongside its commander-in-chief, Park Sang-jin, he played a major role in the independence movement, including collecting funds for the campaign to restore national sovereignty from wealthy households across the country. In 1918 the Gwangbokhoe organisation was discovered, and on 28 January that year he was arrested by the Japanese police; on 11 August 1921 he was executed together with Park Sang-jin, giving his life for his country.
