Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an unusual artefact: the genealogical record, or jokbo, of the Yeonsan Seo clan of Hongseong, carved onto stone. A jokbo records a family's line of descent so that the continuity of a clan can be preserved and handed down to later generations, and this is usually done by compiling it into a book. The Yeonsan Seo clan did so in an unusual way: 136 years ago they had the genealogy carved onto eight square slabs of oseok, a hard stone with a black lustre, and have preserved it in this form ever since. Each slab measures 25cm across and 36cm high, and is about 3cm thick.
