Standing Cheonan Jangsan-ri Stone Buddha
천안장산리석불입상 · 天安長山里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha stands in Jangsan-ri, Susin-myeon, Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, atop a square pedestal. The head, bearing a topknot-shaped knot of hair, is large in proportion to the body, and the face, its nose and eyes badly worn, has been repaired with cement. The neck carries three folds known as samdo, and in front of the abdomen the knot of an undergarment is visible; the hands are joined before the abdomen with the thumbs of each touching. A stele standing near the statue is inscribed with a date corresponding to the 50th year of the Kangxi era (the 42nd year of King Sukjong, 1716), suggesting that the Buddha was likely carved around the same time.
